SARASOTA - One person has been taken to the hospital after being pinned up against a pillar by a vehicle at a local hardware store.

The crash happened Tuesday around noon in front of DG Hardware on South Tamiami Trail.

73-year-old Mary Walsh of Delaware was backing out of her parking space. She told authorities she believed that her shoe was wet from the pavement, and when she took her foot off the gas pedal to put her foot on the brake, it slid off the brake and hit the gas. That caused her vehicle to accelerate backwards and hit a beige Honda SUV. She hit it so hard that the Honda went up in the air and came down on the side of a gray Lexus, and then slid off of it, hitting 87-year-old Milton Fox of Sarasota, who had just gotten out of the Lexus.

Fox is being treated at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the beige Honda was not injured.

Walsh has been cited for Improper Backing, which is a $166 fine.

Perhaps, instead of just imposing a fine, her driving skills, eyesight and reaction time should be evaluated before she is allowed to drive again. There does come a time when one should no longer be driving and putting innocent lives in danger. You all know what I'm talking about...
