Pedestrian fatally struck in Port Charlotte

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - A pedestrian was hit and killed by a minivan Sunday evening after troopers say he walked into the path of the vehicle on Tamiami Trail.

It happened shortly after 8pm at the intersection of Tamiami Trial and Conway Boulevard.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the minivan was traveling southbound on Tamiami Trail approaching the intersection on a green light when a man pushing a bicycle walked into the intersection.

The minivan was unable to avoid the man and hit him.  He was transported to Bayfront Port Charlotte, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity has not been released.
