TAMPA - A Parrish man, who is a U.S. Army veteran, received a long-overdue Silver Star Medal for life-saving, heroic acts in Vietnam.

62-year-old Ralph Morgan, an Army Special Forces radio operator, saved his platoon when they came under heavy rocket and mortar fire in an isolated Vietnam outpost in enemy territory.

The medal pinning is the first of its kind to be held at the new USO Tampa Bay at Tampa International Airport.

U.S. Senator Bill Nelson is presiding over the ceremony. He recovered Morgan's award, which was originally approved in 1972, but was not processed until now.

The Silver Star Medal is the military's third highest decoration for valor, awarded specifically for gallantry in action against an enemy.
