SARASOTA, Fla. -- This weekend kicks off the 2nd Annual Sarasota Stand-Up Paddleboard race series. And if last year's success is any indication, this year will be off the charts.
The Sarasota SUP Series begins on Siesta Key Beach this Saturday, and coming on the heels of the inaugural year, it promises to be a great time. “We are anticipating to not only double our racers, but we have triple the amount of sponsors we had last year. So, the community is really embracing us," says founder Robb Alfieri.
Because Sarasota is such a beautiful and desired destination, picking just one spot for the annual race was too difficult. "This Saturday, June 21st, is the first race. It is on Siesta Key Beach and begins at 9am. August 23rd will be at Nathan Benderson Park at the sailing center. Then on October 11th it will be at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron out at Mote Marine."
The race is the focal point, but there will be a multitude of activities to help get people into paddleboarding, and also to entertain them on race day. "We also have board and equipment rentals for those people who are interested in the sport, but haven't done it a lot. If you need equipment, we will have it there for you."
The first of the three races is this Saturday. It's the longest day of the year, so you have plenty of daylight to at least stop by the races. “There's going to be food, music, things to drink…it’s an adventure for the whole family. We really want to emphasize that. It’s free to the public, and really a great way to spend the day at the beach with your family," says Alfieri.
