NORTH PORT, Fla. -One person is dead after an altercation with a police officer who was investigating a suspicious vehicle parked along a road in North Port.

Tuesday night at 10:48 pm, a North Port Police Officer checked out a suspicious white minivan at Toledo Blade Boulevd approximately ½ mile north of Interstate I -75. Approximately 1 minute later, the officer called out “shots fired” and additional officers were dispatched and responding to the area.

According to the North Port Police Department, the suspect brandished a weapon at the time of the encounter.

The officer involved did not sustain any physical injuries, however, the occupant of the  suspicious vehicle was pronounced dead at the hospital.

No further details were immediately available.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will investigate the shooting.  "That way it is a non-biased entity conducting the investigation. I believe there was a dashboard cam that was placed into evidence with the Sheriff's Office. Interviews were conducted with the officer," says North Port Police Assistant Chief Anthony Sirianni.

That video has not been released. Neither has the name of the person shot or even the officer. The officer has been put on leave as the investigation is ongoing. We are told he is also getting the proper support at this time.

One big question is why the man in a light colored minivan was parked there in the first place.  "It's not unusual for people to pull off if they are tired of driving. Why he was there? Perhaps we will find out as the investigation continues," says Assistant Chief Sirianni.
