NORTH PORT, Fla. -- City leaders say they are finally ready to tackle the pothole problem. In 2012, the majority of voters approved a more than $40 million bond. The city selected the contractor for Phase One on Tuesday, and work is set to begin in weeks.

We've heard the complaints for years from residents like Barbara Wall who lives on a pothole-riddled road. “It's really in need of resurfacing pretty badly."

“Phase One will begin in the North Port Estates Area." Director of Public Works, Bradford Adumuah, says they city now has the money from a voter-approved bond, and has broken the project up into eight phases.

Tuesday, Public Works agreed on a bid. “I don't have enough words to express how I feel. I am very excited and happy."

Prep work has already started in certain areas in town. The entire project should be complete within the next two and a half years, covering 266 miles of neighborhood streets in the process.

Many of those streets have drained the city's resources. "We have been repairing and patching pothole roads that are gone. They need to be rehabilitated. You patch them, then you come back and re-patch them. It's not the most efficient use of resources," says Adumah.

He says that means even if your street isn't on the list, repairs and upkeep will come quicker and more often. "Now with these roads being fixed, we will be able to do what we should have been doing all along: routine maintenance."

The first three phases are to be complete by the end of the year.

The lowest bid coming in for Pase One’s area in North Port Estates was from Ajax Paving out of Venice. Work is expected to begin next Monday.

In the meantime, residents can find out if their road will be getting work done on the City of North Port website.
