NORTH PORT, Fla. -- The North Port Fire Rescue District has announced that a 14-year firefighter and paramedic has lost his battle after suffering a cardiac event last week.

50-year-old Lt. Jeffrey Newland died Wednesday night.

Lt. Newland began his career as a Firefighter/Paramedic at North Port Fire Rescue in January of 2000. He was promoted to Lieutenant in February of 2008, and was most recently the “A” Shift station officer at Station 82, on North Port Blvd.

The Navy veteran is survived by his significant other Beverly Ward, 6-year-old son Clayton, 17-year-old step-son Colton, mother Jane, and brother Jim.

A fundraiser planned for May 6th at Five Guys Burgers & Fries in North Port will continue as planned, benefiting the North Port Firefighters benevolent Association, which will give the money to Lt. Newland's family.
