SARASOTA-- A new bi-partisan bill in the Florida Senate calls for increasing the speed limit by 5 miles-per-hour on interstates, highways and roads in the state.

"It's time that Florida review its laws and looks to see if another 5 miles-per-hour will help Florida drivers get there a little quicker," said Senator Jeff Brandes of St. Petersburg.

If the bill passes:

  • Interstates would go from 70 mph to 75 mph.
  • Four lane divided highways outside of urban areas would go from 65 mph to 70 mph.
  • State roads would be 65 mph from 60 mph.

"I think it's fantastic. I think we ought to do it. Anything to keep the traffic flowing in the morning," said Suzannah Hagan of Sarasota.

"I know people are worried about accidents, but I don't think it will cause a problem," said Courtney Corbett of Sarasota.

Al Danko, however, feels the legislation would create a problem. The instructor with Ault's driving school believes the bill is "stupid."

"We aren't race car drivers. You are going to have tire problems and then you will have blow outs. People roll in their cars. It's just a matter of time. We aren't ready for this," said Danko.

If the legislation passes, the Florida Department of Transportation will have the final say on which interstates, highways and roads will be able to have the speed limit increase.

Nobody forcing you drive that fast, Its just speed limit. if you can't handle a car at 75MPH stay in a left lane and drive at 40mph or whatever you want it do drive. De facto many ppl drive above that already, me included. Its not speed that gets you in trouble, its distraction like cellphones and a habbit of eating breakfast or lunch and driving at same time. And 5mph actually will gain you just about 5 seconds on mile driving. Giving 350 miles trip from JAX to MIAMI it will add up to just 1750 seconds...or 30 min give or take. For me its makes pretty big difference.

Raising the speed limit 5 MPH will get you there 45 seconds faster (try it) and at greater risk. Like dying, if one thing doesn't get you something else will. As with driving if one thing doesn't slow you down something else will....
