VENICE, FLA. - The Florida Suncoast is known for its beautiful beaches, which attract plenty of tourists to our local community. On Sunday, tourists were in town from all over the world but they were hardly the type to sit around on the beach. Around 700 athletes competed in a national triathlon hosted by Revolution 3 in Venice.

“There are people who fly into the states for these” Kevin Schrock told ABC 7.

The athletes competed in either an Olympic or Half Iron Man length triathlon.

“Swim, bike, run. It is about a mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run,” said Jen Witt from Chicago. Witt came to cheer on her brother who also came from Chicago to compete in his first Half Iron-man race.

Sunday’s race was the second annual Rev 3 triathlon held in Venice. Last year’s event pumped nearly a half million dollars in the local economy.

“We had 700 racers, so you can average for every racer probably three or four people because they bring their families especially to a Rev 3 event” said Schrock who was working as Rev 3’s transition coordinator.

Sherry Bellomo came down from Orlando to support and cheer on her daughter who was also competing in the Half Iron-man.

“We’re trying to leave some money in the downtown area,” said Bellomo. “We had a fabulous dinner down there, great breakfast down there, great shops and restaurants and it is just a beautiful town to visit.”

Bellomo traveled with her son-in-law and his family and they all spent three nights in town.

Sunday’s race was Rev 3’s season finale but they are already planning next years race on the island.
