MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. – The owners of a former Manatee County animal shelter who were charged with Animal Cruelty and Fraud will go to trial in October.

Alan and Sheree Napier appeared in court Wednesday. Both have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

They were arrested in April after deputies raided the Napier Log Cabin Horse and Animal Sanctuary. More than 300 animals were removed from the shelter because of deplorable conditions.

Since that raid, Manatee County Animal Services has been under fire for not recognizing the problems sooner at Napier’s.

To try and prevent future problems, a consulting firm has been selected to review the operations at the agency. The California-based company will begin an evaluation of the agency.

The Matrix consulting group must still negotiate the cost and how the evaluation will be done.
