MYAKKA CITY, Fla. - Compassion and concern blossomed at a fundraiser Saturday in Myakka City by giving hope to more than a dozen needy horses.

The horses are known as the "Forgotten 17". All of them were seized recently from Napier's Animal Sanctuary. Volunteers said the horses were malnourished and have had numerous medical issues.

The woman who is currently sheltering the horses, Beth Shuttleworth, said “The entire community has been aware of the situation for many years . Anyone in the position I was in and had the land and feed available would take them (the horses) in. So, I think I was a device to get them here (to safety) and the community has come together to take care of them.”

Shuttleworth said even though the horses are not doing great right now, they are slowly getting better. Donations from Saturday's fundraiser went to help provide food and medical supplies for the animals.
