DeSOTO COUNTY, Fla. - A crash among a group of motorcycle riders left one person dead and two others injured Sunday afternoon.

It happened at 1:17pm Sunday on King’s Highway near Peace River Street. That's in DeSoto County, near where it meets Sarasota and Charlotte Counties, just north of the Lake Suzy area.

Florida Highway Patrol says the rider of one bike was northbound on King’s Highway, attempting to take the lead among a group of motorcycles when he lost control and crashed. Then another group member was unable to avoid the first motorcycle, collided with him, and lost control as well.

The rider of the first bike, 46-year-old Timothy Dudley of Port Charlotte, died at Lee Memorial Hospital.

The second bike had a passenger with the rider, and they went to the hospital. 58-year-old Timothy Schneider of Port Charlotte suffered serious injuries, and passenger Rosemary Aresta of Punta Gorda suffered critical injuries. Both are list in stable condition.

None were wearing helmets at the time, according to FHP.

Charges are pending an investigation.
