SARASOTA, Fla. -- For the first time, we're hearing from the mother of a toddler who died after being left in a hot car. It happened Sunday morning at a mobile home park at 15th Street and North Orange Avenue.
23-year-old Uriel Hernandez told police he picked up his two year old daughter Alejandra Hernandez-Mendoza at her mother's house early that morning and brought her back to his house.
Police say Hernandez went inside to get a phone charger and fell asleep, leaving the child in the hot car for five hours.
Tuesday night, the child's mother, Valeria Mendoza, spoke to ABC 7 exclusively about her daughter’s father, and what he did.
"He loved her more than anything in the world. People are calling him a bad father for forgetting, and I'm not saying I'm on his side and it was ok what he did, but honestly he didn't do it on purpose."
Hernandez is charged with Aggravated Manslaughter and is being held without bond.
