SARASOTA, Fla. -- The trial of a Sarasota County woman accused of abusing and killing her stepdaughter will continue Tuesday.

Misty Stoddard faces a First Degree Murder charge in the death of 11-year-old Melissa Stoddard. Prosecutors say the young autistic girl was bound and duct taped to a board, causing her death.

The case is being heard by a 14 person jury.

In opening statements Monday, the prosecutor told the jury that the 11-year-old is dead because of her stepmother’s actions.

The defense asked the jury to keep an open mind.
