Manatee Schools to present strategic plan Monday

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The first day of school on the Suncoast is fast approaching, and in anticipation of the big day, Manatee County Schools superintendent Rick Mills is holding a "state of the schools" presentation.

The event is open to the public. The presentation will focus on the district's new strategic plan called "foundations for excellence".

The plan outlines the school district's goals and how it plans to monitor its progress.

The school district is starting this year on a very different foot than pervious school years. Last year at this time they had a $8.9 million deficit. But now they have a $4 million fund balance.

This summer, the district passed a $558 million tentative budget for the current school year. It includes increases for security. The district is working to put one full time armed security person at all 33 of its elementary schools.

The presentation will be held in the auditorium of Braden River High School Monday at 2pm until 3:30pm.

ABC 7's Bobeth Yates will be at the presentation and will have more tonight on ABC 7 News.

School is set to begin for students next week. First day of school for Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte counties will be on Monday, August 18th.

Teachers return to school starting this week.

My name is Scott.
