MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - Florida lawmakers are reportedly stunned by the extent of the Manatee County School budget crisis. Superintendent Rick Mills is in Tallahassee this week, and the state review of the money mess was described as "appalling" and "radioactive".
The report done by the auditor general's office found numerous financial problems, including an operating deficit of more than eight million dollars last year. Mills went on to lay out a plan to fix the financial issues and is hoping to be out of the red by next year.
Members of the state's auditing committee say they're pleased with Mill's plan to correct the problems.
Manatee also plans to hire a new school board attorney and an auditing team.
