MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - For the first time in 30 years, a member of Sarasota's St. Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church was the lucky parishioner to find the cross during this year’s Epiphany Celebration in Tarpon Springs.

18-year-old Peter Smith of Ellenton achieved the honor in the 108th celebration of the event.

He, along with 42 other boys, jumped into the cold waters in Tarpon Springs to find the cross. Smith emerged from the water with the cross a short time later.

The event happens every Jan. 6 to commemorate the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist and offers a blessing of the waters and the boats.
