Bradenton, FL-With a unanimous 4-0 vote, the School Board of Manatee County approved the $568.3 million budget recommended by Superintendent Rick Mills during a public hearing Tuesday evening at the School Support Center in Bradenton. Board member Robert Gause was unable to attend tonight's hearing due to a previously scheduled commitment.

The approved budget meets the following priorities established by Superintendent Mills in the district’s Fiscal Recovery Plan presented in May:

  • For the first time in four years, the budget meets the state-required fund balance of three percent, or $10.3 million.

  • The budget reinvests in district employees by providing pay increases, including pay increases collaboratively settled with the Manatee Education Association and AFSCME.

  • The budget repays a third of internal funds donated by schools and sets the stage for full repayment over the next three school years.

Formulation of the 2013-2014 budget was a transparent process that included four public hearings (July 29th, August 29th, September 9th and September 17th). A complete Line-Item Budget was posted on the home page of the Manatee District’s website along with a Budget Overview, a School Internal Accounts Payback schedule, the Final Budget for Board Approval and other documents.

“The budget approved by the School Board this evening is a realistic and executable budget that will help the Manatee County School District move forward successfully,” said Superintendent Rick Mills. “It’s now time to turn our full attention to what matters most, and that is supporting our schools and teachers in raising the achievement levels of our more than 46,000 students.”
