ST. PETERSBURG, FL. - A man is dead after threatening a police officer with an ax.
St. Pete Police responded to a call about a man carrying an ax and making threats near downtown St. Petersburg on Monday around 6:45 pm.
As the first officer approached the area, he saw a group of 4 to 6 people running in fear. Then the officer saw the suspect rounding the corner, holding a large ax. The officer says the man was making unintelligible statements.
The man ran at a fast pace toward the officer, who drew his firearm and yelled for the man to stop and drop the ax. When the man was about seven feet away, the officer fired multiple times.
The 27-year-old man was pronounced dead by paramedics. Investigators believe he was a transient.
Neither the officer nor any of the witnesses involved suffered any injuries.
Detectives are still investigating how the suspect became in possession of the ax. The officer has been put on administrative leave while investigators from the Department's Investigative Services Bureau, Internal Affairs Unit and the Pinellas/Pasco State Attorney's Office conduct their inquiry.
