Man crushed by elevator at St. Pete resort

ST. PETERSBURG - Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies are investigating an accidental death at a St. Pete Beach resort.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. at the Tradewinds Jacaranda Beach Villas on St. Pete Beach.

According to Sheriff's deputies, 45-year-old Mark Allen Johnson was working on an elevator at the Tradewinds when the elevator fell on top of him.

Johnson and another employee of SWS Environmental Services were working on the hotel elevator, cleaning oil from the elevator shaft, when the elevator fell. The second worker was not injured.

The elevator was locked by hotel maintenance prior to the men beginning their work. The two men had been working on the elevator for approximately 40 minutes prior to the incident.

Sheriff's deputies are investigating the incident as an accidental death.

The investigation continues.
