Man arrested for beating boss's dog to death in Sarasota

SARASOTA, Fla. - A Sarasota man sits behind bars after authorities say he beat to death a dog that belonged to his own boss. Detectives say Kevin Koscielniak -- an employee at John's Automotive -- killed John's 4-year-old mastiff using a tire iron.

The entire event was caught on a nearby surveillance camera. Now Koscielniak is behind bars and likely not going anywhere anytime soon.

“It's unbelievable because there is no cause for it. Most crimes there is no cause for it, but the dog was not charging him. There was no provocation and we don't know the motive,” says Wendy Rose of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

The motive may have something to do with an incident that happened over the weekend. On Saturday, Koscielniak was asked to leave the auto repair shop, located on Snug Harbor Place off 17th Street in Sarasota, after apparently drinking one too many. A few hours later, surveillance footage shows the man returning to the business -- jumping over a fence, removing the dog from a kennel, and beating the dog to death with a tire iron.

Moments later he is seen wrapping the animal in a blanket, cutting the fence leading to an adjacent business, and burying the dog there.

“There are always people who are just wicked, angry and mean.” Elise Matthes, is president of Sarasota in Defense of Animals, an organization committed to saving canines from abusive situations. “Just when you think you have heard all the abuse anybody could ever inflict on an animal, there is always something else that is more horrendous.”

Koscielniak is facing multiple charges, including one count of cruelty to animals resulting in death and two counts of burglary. His bond is set at $46,000. According to authorities, even though the man had a job, he is homeless and lives in his car.
