SARASOTA - A Sarasota man has been charged with Exploitation of an Elderly Person after investigators say he withdrew tens of thousands of dollars from his demented mother's bank account.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested 50-year-old Michael Dion Wednesday at Doctor's Hospital.

Earlier this month, Dion took his 72-year-old mother to the bank and asked to withdraw more than $12,000 from her IRA. His mother appeared confused but told bank staff to do whatever her son said. She admitted she did not understand what was going on.

The Department of Children and Families worked with Detectives who determined Dion had also made withdrawals from his mother’s CD and deposited the money in her account. He has been withdrawing $600 each day since August 15 for a total of $22,800, nearly draining his mother’s accounts.

Dion admitted he buys and uses more than a dozen Oxycontin and Xanax pills a day and acknowledged that his mother has dementia and doesn’t know about his addiction.

Dion has been charged with Exploitation of an Elderly Person and is currently being held on $7,500 bond.

I don't know what bank this poor woman had her money in but they are a disgrace!! I was in banking for many years and we were very sensitive to anyone, even family members, who tried to withdraw money on a regular basis when the account holder was elderly.
This should have been stopped a long time ago. Where was the branch manager? Where were the tellers? Was everyone just doling out money without thinking?
If this was a relative of mine, I would get a lawyer and have a serious talk with the bank that allowed this for so long.
