(RNN / AP) - A Florida man was trying to kiss a rattlesnake when it bit him on the tongue, witnesses told Action News Jax.
Ron Reinold was rushed to the hospital in a medical helicopter after the snake bit him Tuesday. He was in critical condition, Putnam County Fire and Rescue told WFTV.
Neighbor Charles Goff said he found the snake on Monday and they put it in a tank.
"The next morning before I got up, they were playing with the snake," Goff told Action News. "One boy said 'I'm going to kiss it in the mouth' and it bit him in the face."
Family said Reinold was doing much better on Wednesday, and he is expected to survive.
WTLV in Jacksonville quoted a friend of the victim as saying that he had been drinking while handling the seemingly calm eastern diamondback. But when he moved toward the reptile as if to kiss it, the snake bit him.
