LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. -- Because of a recent report from Safe Choice Security, when you go to Longboat Key you can not only get a relaxing tan, but you can do it with a peace of mind.
SCS ranked Longboat Key #10 out of the top ten safest places to be in the state of Florida. Also ranking in the top ten is yet another Suncoast community, Punta Gorda. They come in at #8.
And if that wasn't good enough news for the Suncoast, North Port ranks as #13 and Venice ranks as #17.
Safe Choice Security evaluated more than 300 cities in Florida using 2012 FBI crime statistics. The ratings are per 1,000 citizens and were based on the following:
* Punta Gorda - .65 in violent crimes and a 16.43 property crimes per 1,000.
* Longboat Key - .28 in violent crimes and a 17.45 property crimes per 1,000.
* North Port - 2.22 in violent crimes and a 18.34 property crimes per 1,000.
* Venice - 1.89 in violent crimes and a 19.73 property crimes per 1,000.
Longboat Key is a hot spot for travelers, tourists and even people who decided to call a small piece of the Suncoast their temporary home.
Punta Gorda has pedestrian and bicycle trails, a marina with a colorful harborwalk. and an array of historic addresses on the National Register of Historic Places.
North Port is a largely residential community with a bigger than average number of families with children, and is well known for Warm Mineral Springs.
Venice is noted for its older than average population large snowbird population, beautiful beaches, sharks teeth and its pier.
Safety under the sun is what these places on the Suncoast are all about.
