Local Islamic Society reacts to Pastor's move to Manatee County

MANATEE COUNTY-- A spokesperson for the Islamic Society of Sarasota and Bradenton says a person can move wherever they want to, even if it is an infamous Qur'an burning Pastor.

As we reported Monday, Pastor Terry Jones is moving his church from Gainesville to East Bradenton. Jones has made a name for himself around the world as the Pastor who burns Qur'ans.

"We definitely don't hate Muslims, but there is something very, very wrong with the foundation and roots of that religion," Jones told us over the phone. "This is a very dangerous, evil book and a very dangerous and evil religion."

Samir Khatib with the Islamic Society of Sarasota and Bradenton says wholeheartedly that Jones is wrong.

"There is nowhere in the Qur'an, and I challenge anybody to come and tell me where it says that we should hate and kill. There is not one phrase," said Khatib.

Khatib invites Jones to visit the Mosque in Sarasota on Lockwood Ridge Road.

"I'd be the first one to receive him in the Mosque and take him around and answer his questions," said Khatib.

Yet, Khatib knows that's unlikely to happen.

"I hope this hate he has in his heart and his mind will be alleviated and go. When someone has hate in his heart, that's a black mark from God," said Khatib.

Jones is already planning his next Qur'an burning for this September 11th in the city of Mulberry, Florida.
