An inmate who escaped custody at Venice Regional Medical Center was caught by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office about an hour later and has now been booked into the Sarasota County Jail.

Ricky Dingler was hospitalized on Tuesday when he complained of chest pains following his burglary arrest by the Venice Police Department. Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office corrections personnel were supervising Dingler but he ran from his hospital room about 12:30 p.m.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and Venice Police Department set up a perimeter and searched on foot, with K-9s and by air. Deputies located him around 1:45 p.m., in a motor home behind a house on Serata Street just a couple of blocks from the hospital.

In addition to the burglary charge from Tuesday and an Alabama warrant for similar crimes there, charges are pending against Dingler for escape.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an administrative review to determine if all policies and procedures were followed.
