NORTH PORT- I-75 is back open in North Port, and many residents back in their homes, after a Sunday afternoon brush fire closed down a portion of the interstate, and forced some to leave their homes as a precaution.

The fire, near Lamarque Elementary School, spread through several acres, making the stretch of interstate between Sumter and Toledo Blade Boulevards virtually undrivable.  On the ground, drivers on I-75 were stranded.  Above, helicopters dropped buckets of water on the flames, attempting to contain it.

The fire only caused minor structure damage to nearby properties.

After several hours, the fire was contained, easing both traffic congestion and concerns.

Firefighters were on the scene into the night checking to see if any hot spots pop up.  The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
