**UPDATE** Sarasota Police confirmed Wednesday that Ebbeson died from a gunshot wound to the face, and have ruled his death a suicide.
SARASOTA, Fla. - Sarasota Police confirmed Tuesday morning that businessman Anders Ebbeson, husband of former congresswoman Katherine Harris, has committed suicide in their Sarasota home.
Police responded to the 1300 block of Bay Point Drive just before 8am Tuesday morning.
Harris and the 68-year-old Ebbeson married in 1996 after meeting on a blind date at Sarasota's historic Opera House opening night, according to Tampa Bay Times.
Harris received national attention during the 2000 presidential election while she was Secretary of State of Florida.
Ebbeson was going through health issues, according to Pastor William Hild. "At this time, we're asking the media to respect the privacy of the family. Mr. Ebbeson was recently suffering from an illness but it is unknown if that is why he took his own life. The family is asking for privacy, prayers, thoughts and love from the community."
"We're asking the community respect the family at this difficult time. Mrs. Harris wanted the community, her family and friends to know that her husband is no longer suffering," added Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino.
Ebbeson was a Swedish businessman. A close friend who wished to remain anonymous told ABC 7 that Ebbeson was a "wonderful, gentle, soft spoken man who was extremely generous."
