MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Recent downpours have created problems for crews attempting to repair the Lake Manatee Dam.

The plant superintendent tells the Bradenton Herald that rain over the past week has slowed the project down. However, he anticipates that the necessary repairs will be completed close to the original timeframe.

Earlier this year, workers discovered erosion at the dam. Heavy rains could cause it to fail and potentially flood nearby properties and homes.

The plant superintendent previously told ABC 7 that the reconstruction project will not only extend the life of the 48-year old dam, but help preserve Lake Manatee, which provides two-thirds of the area's drinking water.
