Hazmat responds to unknown white powder in Sarasota mall

**UPDATE** Police have determined that the substance was the ashes of a woman that were being spread by her fiancé.

**UPDATE** Sarasota Police say that the suspicious substance is believed to be some sort of crushed up solid product, but the Fire Department does not believe it is hazardous.

The mall has been re-opened.

SARASOTA - Sarasota County Fire and Sarasota Police have responded to a situation at Westfield Southgate Mall regarding a white powder.

Just before Noon Tuesday, someone walked into the Lens Crafters store and threw an unknown substance and fled the area.

The Westfield Southgate Shopping Center is currently closed and secured while Hazmat teams conduct an investigation.

Crews from the Sarasota County Fire Department are sending a team in to sample the substance. People inside are being asked to shelter in place until the substance can be determined.

There are no reported injuries or medical issues at this time.
