HazMat called after suspicious package found in Sarasota

SARASOTA - A suspicious package found in downtown Sarasota prompted the response of the HazMat team Thursday.

Police say they package was in an alleyway along the 1400 block of Main Street.

An alert citizen believed the package was unusual due to a false return address and insufficient postage.

A HazMat team was called into examine it, and took it away for further evaluation.

1st St was closed down for about a half hour due to Fire Department trucks and apparatus. Police say no evacuations were necessary.

The Sarasota Police Department says they appreciate and rely on the community of Sarasota to be aware of unusual or suspicious items or events, and asks that they bring these types of circumstances to our attention. Police can then react to each report, dispelling suspicions or investigating further.
