SARASOTA - Sarasota County commissioners, Gulf Gate Library staff and representatives of Westfield Mall will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, to celebrate the opening of the new library service in the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall, 8201 South Tamiami Trail. The new library is located at the southern end of the mall next to JC Penney.

The location in the mall will serve as a temporary home while a new Gulf Gate Library is builtat the corner of Gulf Gate Drive and Curtiss Avenue. The new library is expected to be open in 2014.

"The mall has ample parking and is less than 2 miles away from the existing Gulf Gate Library, so our library users will find it very convenient," said Sarasota County Library Director Sarabeth Kalajian. "We are really looking forward to the opportunity to introduce our library services to people who may have never visited the public library."

The mall location offers more than 18,000 square feet of space (larger than the existing Gulf Gate Library) and is on the same Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) route - Route 1 - that stops at the existing Gulf Gate Library location. The temporary location will be open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday-Saturday.
