MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - The only 2-time Heisman trophy winner in college football history, Archie Griffin, learned many lessons from his coach Woody Hayes at Ohio State. One of them was "pay it forward"; so Archie does just that with his annual charity golf tournament.

For the 4th year in a row, Griffin brought his friends to the Suncoast to raise money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County.

"Coming from Columbus, Ohio, where it is 28 degrees and snow on the ground, to get down here to Sarasota to support Archie and the Boys and Girls Club…I'm looking forward to a great round with my group from Columbus and hopefully we can pull it off," said former OSU safety Michael Doss.

To date, Archie's golf tournament, held out at the Concession Golf Club, has raised over $175,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs. Because Archie is a running back, his brethren in the backfield feel that they have a lot to do with raising that money.

They paid it forward on the field. "Yeah, pretty much, because we all understand each other's pain. We can sit around and compare injuries, talk about who got hit the hardest, and who didn't get hit," says former Michigan running back Leroy Howard.

Unbelievably, at a major event for the Ohio State University, a University of Michigan golfer may be the best golfer out there. That is heresy in the land of the scarlet and gray. Crazy talk, but true.

"Oh, out of the players, Leroy. Leroy would be the best. And I hate saying that about a Michigan guy (laughs)," said former OSU running back Robert Davis.

“Of course, really? C'mon! I can't wear this Michigan stuff and suck," says Howard.

Maybe they hope the gators get him, but because he was a running back too, and because this is all about the kids, the enemy is welcomed to golf for Archie's kids. "It's a great cause, and Leroy just for comic relief, entertainment purposes, and non-stop talk. It’s great to have him around," says Davis.
