The big chill is on for the area. Temperatures will drop below freezing for a couple of hours for areas mainly east of I-75 Thursday morning. Frost will be widespread even west of I-75.

If you have early tee time on Thursday it may be delayed as a result of frost. Highs today were only in the mid to upper 50s, and highs on Thursday will only be slightly higher.

Another shot of cold air will move in on Friday morning, keeping the chilly air here through Saturday morning. Winds will also be a bit breezy on Friday morning making for wind chills in the upper 20s and low 30s once again.

Could see some frost again on Saturday morning as the winds settle and temperatures drop again into the mid to upper 30s.

Because of the lower temperatures, shelters will open Wednesday night in Sarasota County:

  • Sarasota - Salvation Army - Center of Hope, 1400 Tenth St., Sarasota, FL 34236
  • Venice - Grace United Methodist Church, 400 East Field Ave., Venice, FL 34285, will open at 5 p.m.
  • Englewood - St. David's Episcopal Church, 401 South Broadway, Englewood, FL 34223, will open at 6 p.m.
  • North Port - New Hope Community Church, 5600 South Biscayne Dr., North Port, FL 34287, will open at 7 p.m.

And if you're using a space heater to keep warm, be sure to keep them away from children, pets and furniture.
