FPL: Most pet owners leave electronics on while away

SARASOTA - A new study from Florida Power and Light has found that the majority of pet owners leave their household electric items on for their pets when they're not home. It could be causing your energy bill to skyrocket.

The survey found that the three most common items left on for pets are air conditioners, ceiling fans, and lights.

To give you an idea of how expensive your bill could be, ceiling fans left on all the time can account for up to $7 a month.

Of the 1,500 Floridians surveyed, 58% own a cat, dog or bird. Of those, 86% report that they leave certain electronic items on while the owners are not home.

17% of pet owners report leaving a television on, and 9% report leaving a radio on.

FPL says there are ways to cut down on energy costs without leaving your pets uncomfortable. Officials suggest FPL's Energy Dashboard, and taking the online Home Energy Survey is a start.
