SARASOTA, FL. – Five Miami men have been arrested after a police chase that started after an armed robbery at a Sarasota jewelry store.

Tuesday evening just after 6:30pm, four robbers entered Mayor’s Jewelry store at Westfield Southgate Mall wearing hooded sweatshirts and white gloves.  One of the men was armed with a handgun and ordered the employees to the rear of the store instructing the employees to lie down and stay quiet.

That's when one of the other robbers, armed with a hammer, smashed four of the jewelry store’s display cases and stole jewelry from the display cases, including several Tag Huerer watches.  The men also stole the store’s cash drawer.  The estimated value of the stolen items is $25,000.

The suspects then ran from the store to a waiting vehicle parked at the mall entrance near the Banana Republic, where a fifth man was waiting inside.

Sarasota Police officers arrived on the scene within two minutes and located a witness that observed the 4 men run to the vehicle parked in front of the mall. The witness provided a description of the getaway vehicle and a partial Florida tag number.

At around 7pm, a Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputy saw the vehicle going south on Interstate 75 near S.R. 681. The vehicle then drove westbound on Laurel Road, where the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle near Mission Valley, but the suspects fled.

Another deputy was able to use stop sticks on the vehicle, which began to enter northbound I-75 before pulling over behind the PGT factory.

The five suspects exited the vehicle and fled in different directions. Canine units had been training in the area and quickly arrived.  By 8pm, the five suspects were arrested with assistance from the sheriff's office's Air One helicopter.

Three of the suspects required medical treatment for dog bite injuries, two were treated and released and one suspect was admitted to Venice Hospital.

All the stolen jewelry was recovered near PGT.

The five suspects were from Miami and are being charged with Armed Robbery by Sarasota Police Department detectives.

Arrested for Armed Robbery was:

• Isaac M. Thompson

• Marvin Wright

• Marcus Antonio Wright

• Godtrel Dion Granti

• Clarence Lee Gaskin III

Sarasota County Sheriff's officials say it's not uncommon for criminals to travel from South Florida and commit their crimes elsewhere in the state.

Anyone with additional information on the robbery is asked to contact Detective DeFrancisco at 941-954-7070.
