SIESTA KEY - Fire officials work to determine what caused a unit of a Siesta Key condo to catch fire.

It happened Sunday in the Peppertree Condos just after 6:30 pm.

Sarasota County firefighters came to find a fire on a second floor unit in the 7-story building. They contained the fire to that unit, but smoke spread to units on other floors.

A woman who lives in the condo that caught fire was home, but escaped safely.

Smoke forced some people on the second floor and on some floors above that to evacuate to the condo's clubhouse.

Firefighters worked on clearing the smoke from the neighboring units so the people living in them could return.

The Red Cross helped find shelter for those who could not go home last night.

Officials are investigating what caused the fire.
