SARASOTA, Fla. – A public hearing Thursday evening will focus on improving pedestrian safety along a dangerous stretch of a Sarasota road by adding pedestrian islands.

The Florida Department of Transportation has been working on a project that would put 12 new islands in along Bee Ridge Road from U.S. 41 to Dunn Drive near Urfer Park.

The plan came about after Bee Ridge Road was ranked third highest in crashes in the 12 counties that make up FDOT’s District One.

The public hearing open house will begin at 5pm, and the formal presentation begins at 6pm at the Trinity United Methodist Church Heritage Hall, located at 4150 South Shade Avenue.

I think I was one of the only Pedestrians who attended the Hearing. There were a few business owners concerned about the Islands would effect their business and a few drivers with concerns about the locations of the Islands.

I personally think the safety islands will encourage Pedestrians to cross in front of vehicles traveling on Bee Ridge between 45 and 50 mph. I think Pedestrian Safety Islands should be used with traffic of 35 mph or less. The 12 safety islands cost 59K each more than the entire sidewalk maintenance expenditure for an entire year. This will encourage many more Pedestrians to "Jaywalk" and be injured and killed.

The FDOT should be more concerned about the lack of a bicycle lane and the street lamp posts which obstruct the center of the sidewalk on Bee Ridge.

The FDOT does not care about Pedestrian Safety. They only care about making money for themselves and construction contractor friends.

I am a vision impaired disabled vet who has been fighting with the FDOT for over ten years about their policy of placing street lamp posts in the middle of the sidewalk and calling it ADA Compliant because they only have to provide a 36 inch clearance to the curb for wheelchair access. Google "FDOT Corruption" and read how messed up they are. Florida Government is broken.

From 2000 to 2010, there have been 781 federal convictions on corruption charges in Florida. That's an average of one every five days for 10 straight years.
