SARASOTA, Fla. -- A Fort Myers man is dead after crashing his vehicle into a utility pole on Sarasota road in Palmer Ranch around 10:15 a.m. this morning.

Florida Highway Patrol says 51- year-old Joseph Nauman of Fort Myers was driving northbound on U.S. 41 when he drifted on to the shoulder, and hit a utility pole.

The pole snapped, dropping its wires down onto another vehicle stopped at the light on Mcintosh Road.

The driver of that vehicle was not injured, but Nauman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The right turn lane of northbound 41 and Mcintosh were closed for several hours while crews replaced the pole and wires. The power at the Oaks Club went out for a short time because of the accident.
