PALMETTO, Fla. - Our Event of the Week is the 34th Annual Model Railroad Show.
It's sponsored by Real Rail, a club dedicated to building and operating model trains.
They hope this show at the Bradenton Area Convention Center will get you excited about model trains and interested in the history of railroads.
"This is going to be a great show," says Real Rail’s Steve Haber.
You'll see trains you recognize, like the Tropicana Train; places you recognize, like the city of Sarasota when the railroad was at its heyday; and trains, trains everywhere. “We actually have Lionel, and we have a comet layout that the kids get to run themselves."
The club's name Real Rail stands for Railroad Education And Learning center.
To fulfill their mission of education, there will be experts at the show to answer your questions. "We will have a table where there are three modelers…we will be giving continuous mini clinics on various model railroad subjects," says master model railroader Bob Hamm.
And Boy Scouts will be at the show to learn about model trains. "They have a merit badge called Railroading Merit Badge, and we have people here who understand railroading and all aspects of it. So we are reaching out to them at no cost to the Boy Scouts," says president Bob Eberley.
Real Rail hopes the show will awaken an excitement and a new appreciation for railroads -- especially in young people. "These are the kinds of things we like to pass on, the railroad history, what it has done for this country, moving commerce."
The show is Saturday and Sunday at the Bradenton Area Convention Center in Palmetto. Doors open at 10am each day. Adult admission is $8, and kids under 13 are free.
