SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. – There are more mangrove issues near Manasota Key, as residents are opposing a plan to develop on a site where mangroves are currently growing.

The Sun Herald reports that residents of the Englewood community Sandpiper Key are rallying against a planned development that would destroy more than five acres of mangroves. A developer is applying for permits to build condos on the land.

Now the Army Corps of Engineers plans to hold public comment regarding the application.

Last month a property owner on Manasota Key cleared mangroves from his property, causing residents to complain to the county. That homeowner now has to replace the plants he removed.
