BRADENTON, Fla. -- Two students at Orange Ridge Elementary are under investigation for reportedly having an unloaded handgun on school grounds.

According to Manatee County Sheriff's Office, a 4th grade student took a .25 caliber handgun from his mother's nightstand and brought it to school.  He passed the gun to a friend, who carried it in his backpack for a majority of the day.

The gun was spotted by another student, who notified a teacher.

Both students were detained in the front office while detectives investigated.
