SARASOTA, Fla. -- The effort to place a strong mayor initiative on the November election ballot is over.
Citizens group "It's Time Sarasota" has been collecting signatures to rewrite the city's charter. It wanted voters to decide whether the city should have an elected mayor instead of the current ceremonial mayor.
The elected mayor would have more power and the ability to veto decisions made by the commission.
But the group did not gather the 3,500 petition signatures needed to meet the deadline to put the issue on the November ballot.
It’s Time Sarasota says it gathered more than 2,000 and hope to regroup and try again for the 2016 election.
