SARASOTA, Fla. -- The effort to place a strong mayor initiative on the November election ballot is over.

Citizens group "It's Time Sarasota" has been collecting signatures to rewrite the city's charter. It wanted voters to decide whether the city should have an elected mayor instead of the current ceremonial mayor.

The elected mayor would have more power and the ability to veto decisions made by the commission.

But the group did not gather the 3,500 petition signatures needed to meet the deadline to put the issue on the November ballot.

It’s Time Sarasota says it gathered more than 2,000 and hope to regroup and try again for the 2016 election.

This thing died a miserable and embarrassing death (again, what is it? for the seventh time?) — and you think people are going to vote in a poll for it? [sad]

The will of 3% of the population cannot dictate to the majority even if they do monkey with a poll to make it look as if there are plenty of supporters. Every time this has been put before the voters—more have joined the ranks of those opposing it. This time they couldn't even get enough support to put it —on— the ballot! What do you think it is that these clowns do not understand about —no—?
