SARASOTA COUNTY - A Sarasota man is in serious condition after his travel trailer caught on fire Wednesday morning.

The Sarasota County Fire Department received a call just before 8am reporting an explosion and a fire on Murphy Road in rural eastern Sarasota County.

Firefighters responded and put out the two-alarm fire, but not before it was fully engulfed in flames. Nothing but the frame was left standing afterward.

According to fire officials, an elderly man who was inside the travel trailer made that 911 call. He told the operator that a propane gas stove inside exploded. “A resident directed us in to exactly where the fire was. We did determine it was a travel trailer, and I believe the 911 call was from the person who was inside the trailer. That person was injured and was airlifted to a trauma center,” says assistant chief Mike Reginer.

That man was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment.

The state fire marshal is on the scene investigating the cause of the fire.
