SARASOTA, Fla. -- Authorities are searching for the driver of a car that hit a 13-year-old kid on a bicycle on Lockwood Ridge Road Thursday.

Troopers say that 13-year-old Samuel Thayer was riding his bicycle south in the southbound lanes of Lockwood Ridge Road near Peachtree Street just before 10am.

That's when he was hit from behind by a Chrysler Pacifica and thrown to the pavement.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle stopped and the driver got out and fled the scene on foot.  A passenger in the car then got in the driver's seat and drove off.

That man, 21-year-old Derrick Brown, Jr., was later pulled over and charged with tampering with evidence and obstruction.

The original driver of the vehicle was not located.

Thayer was flown to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg with serious injuries.
