MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. – U.S. 301 in Parrish has re-opened following a fatal accident that caused a fuel spill Tuesday morning.

The crash happened just after 11:30am.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a car was headed southbound on U.S. 301 when for unknown reasons, the driver steered across the highway at a break in the median in front of Ft. Hamer Road. The car then continued southbound in the northbound lanes until it encountered a Mack truck headed northbound.

The driver of the truck turned at the last second but was unable to avoid a collision.

The driver of the car, who has not been identified, died from their injuries.

The truck driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to Blake Medical Center for treatment.

U.S. 301, which is currently under construction in that area,  was shut down for about 5 hours while crews cleaned up fuel and oil from the road.
