SARASOTA, Fla. - Throughout the nation Monday, people are remembering and honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And the Suncoast is no exception, with a host of events taking place.

The festivities kicked off Monday morning with the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King breakfast. The event was attended by more than 100 people, coming together to celebrate the progress prompted by Dr. King’s work for equality.

But it also served to pay tribute to those who continue the fight for the civil rights.

A notion that keynote speaker Ed James, III says is only possible if the community works as one. “In order for us to really scale the progressive movement that's going on throughout the state of Florida and the nation, we need to really work together as a community. And it’s not always going to be something that’s easy; sometimes it’s painful, but never the less to bring about change we have to be willing to struggle.”

After the breakfast was the Stride Toward Freedom community walk, where people walked from the Robert L. Taylor Center in North Sarasota to Martin Luther King Park in Newtown.

Sarasota city and county officials participated in the event that has been a community tradition for more than 20 years.
