PALMETTO, FL- Palmetto Historical Park and Manatee County Agricultural Museum are hosting a “Doughnut Dolly” Program on Saturday, February 1st at 11:00 am as part of the Legacy of Valor Campaign, honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans and their families. The program will be held in the Carnegie Library Basement, 515 10th Ave. West, Palmetto.
The Vietnam War Red Cross “Doughnut Dollies” were young, college-degreed women who spent a one-year tour in country as morale boosters for American troops. Serving fresh doughnuts and hot coffee, running recreation programs, and visiting hospitals were some of their duties to bring smiles and good cheer to soldiers. Many chose to join the program because of President John F. Kennedy, who encouraged young people to serve their country. On February 1st, Rene Johnson and Susan McLean will present a program about their service as “Doughnut Dollies” during the Vietnam War.
This program is free, refreshments will be served. Space is limited, reservations are necessary. Call 723-4991 to RSVP by January 29th.
