Dog rescued from mangrove island in Venice

VENICE, FL (WWSB) - Sarasota County Sheriff's Deputies rescued a lost dog on an island in the Intracoastal Waterway after it had been missing for 8 days.

The Sheriff's Office is reporting a Venice family's German Shepherd named Rex went missing less than two weeks after they had to put down their other dog, a 15 year old German Shepherd.

Fortunately, a kayaker spotted the dog on a mangrove island in Venice.

Marine Deputy Mike Watson, with help from the Sheriff's Office helicopter, helped get the scared and elusive dog on board his boat. The dog's owners say they adopted him from the Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois, which may have helped him survive those 8 days away from home.

The Sheriff's Office reports Rex is doing well, despite a few stomach issues and lethargy. Needless to say, Rex's owners are relieved Rex is back home, safe and sound after an unusual rescue in the Intracoastal Waterway! Well done SCSO!
