PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A Sarasota man has been charged with several drug charges after deputies say he threw two baggies of what turned out to be crack cocaine out a car window.

21-year-old Brenton Reed was arrested and charged with Trafficking in Cocaine, Possession of Cocaine with the Intent to Sell and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia Thursday evening. He is being held at the Charlotte County Jail without bond pending his First Appearance hearing.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, at about 9pm, a deputy saw a green Honda go through a stop sign in the area of Longley Drive and US 41 without coming to a stop. While the deputy was trying to stop the car, he saw the front seat passenger, who was later identified as Reed, throw two bags from the car. The Honda came to a stop just down the road from where the items were thrown out.

During the traffic stop, deputies learned that the driver, 18-year-old Allen Roberts of North Port, had a suspended driver’s license. When other deputies checked the area where the first deputy saw the items thrown from the car, they found two plastic baggies.

One baggie contained multiple pieces of crack cocaine and the other contained one large piece of crack cocaine. The contents of both bags field tested positive for the presence of cocaine. The combined weight of the contents was almost 36 grams.

Reed was placed under arrest and transported to the Charlotte County Jail. Roberts was issued a criminal citation for Driving While License Suspended with a mandatory court appearance in April.
